• An American Inspiration

  • Magnus was a 17-year old American teen, who was on the verge of becoming a world-class cyclist. He excelled across multiple disciplines - cyclocross, mountain biking, and road racing. He was an inspiration to so many people through how he lived his life and raced his bikes.

Magnus was a brother, a grandson, our son. Everyone who knew him will tell you he had this energy that just lit everything up. That smile. That laugh. The way he could walk into any room and suddenly it mattered more, felt more alive.

His friends didn't just call him a friend. They called him their best friend. That's who Magnus was.

He was kind. He was driven. He was funny and yeah, he had a touch of mischief in the best way. He simply made people smile.

We'll never know who he would've become. That's the thing that sits heaviest. He was still just a kid, but you could see the man he was turning into. It was happening right in front of us, day by day. And then it stopped.

Born in California, raised in Colorado. He loved it all. The trails, the mountains, cycling, skiing, hiking with his dogs Zuma and Oslo. He was getting ready for senior year in high school, pulling a 4.2 GPA while training hard, already thinking about studying business.

He found cycling young through Boulder Junior Cycling, and it became his thing. He raced for the U.S., made Boulder proud on the world's biggest stages. 2021 Junior National Champion in Cyclocross. Two full European seasons with the USA Cycling National Team. Two World Championships. Then mountain biking. He made the World Championship team for that too.

On July 29th, 2023 at 12:28 pm, on his last training ride before the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, just fifteen minutes from home, wearing his USA kit. A reckless driver took all of that away.

But his legacy doesn't end there. We carry Magnus forward in everything we do. In the fight to protect cyclists, pedestrians and anyone outside of a vehicle. In the push for safer roads. In the demand for accountability. His name drives this movement. His spirit fuels this change. That's how we honor him. That's how he lives on.

“The bike was his best friend. Magnus showed me that the power of the bicycle is way greater than I ever imagined, because that character, the person that he became, he became that way in part because of his love of the bike.”

Words from our community

The lives saved because of his legacy will be forever an impact. It shouldn’t be this way. The Boulder community lost an incredible human who was far more than only cycling as his heart was seen always. Magnus, a friend to all on BJC and your incredible son should never have been taken away in reckless driving. We love you guys and know his impact of his character and skill on and off the bike will never be forgotten.

Thank you for all the work you do. Not that many organizations like this exist. We really appreciate the advocacy.

Absolutely brilliant strategy taking them by bus to the places lives have been lost. Bravo.
